I get so sick of uneducated, judgmental people.

thanks for this post.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630747486544792440.post-29088981518176135682009-01-27T07:23:00.000-08:002009-01-27T07:23:00.000-08:00I've been thinking about this with regards to how ...I've been thinking about this with regards to how I talk around other people. I grew up in the south and then went to school out west where everyone thought I was stupid because of my southern accent. And then they asked my ACT score, and when I told them, they shut up for good. As if they thought all that scholarship money for a southern student was some sort of affirmative action.

I have noticed that I unintentionally tailor my dialect for my audience -- and not for the usual reasons. I think I turn the southern accent on and off so that those I am talking to don't, A. call my intelligence into question because I don't talk like they do, or B. become intimidated by the intelligence implied by a non-southern accent. So when I want to sound as smart as I am, I turn it off; when I want to dumb it down a little, I amp it up. I can't believe I'm actually admitting this. Sad, isn't it? We, as southerners, are so ingrained with the notion that a lack of accent implies greater intelligence that we are afraid to embrace the heritage we should be proud of.

And the truth of it is that that southern accent is really a part of who I am. When I talk about sitting on the porch listening to my grandparents sing old Gospel and bluegrass songs, the southern accent is there with a vengeance; when I talk about hiking in the mountains I love with all my heart, it's with a southern accent; when I reminisce about hanging out on the farm where my dad grew up, it all sounds southern in my head. Southern is who I am.

Well, I'm finished! I will not turn it off anymore!

Thank you for helping my have this realization, even if it wasn't exactly what you were aiming for.InkMomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05519976062467674531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630747486544792440.post-86424375195201298872009-01-27T01:45:00.000-08:002009-01-27T01:45:00.000-08:00discrimination and prejudice... a post that made m...discrimination and prejudice... a post that made me think.Shadowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999801833389058410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630747486544792440.post-73832371388924198552009-01-26T22:16:00.000-08:002009-01-26T22:16:00.000-08:00great post woman.great post woman.Devrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04028009566090355704noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5630747486544792440.post-80093286521620850692009-01-26T17:05:00.000-08:002009-01-26T17:05:00.000-08:00I appreciate your puting the definition of Discrim...I appreciate your puting the definition of Discrimination in your post, I have had people say you shouldn't discriminate, and had never taken the time to see what that means!
